Frequently Asked Questions
(and answers!)
How long does a web design project usually take?
The timeline for a web design project can vary significantly depending on its complexity and scope. A simple website might be completed in a few weeks, while more intricate projects with custom features, extensive content, or e-commerce functionality could take several months. However, regardless of the project’s size, I typically prefer to give at least a month for the process.
This extended timeframe allows for a more thoughtful and iterative approach. It gives us the opportunity to sleep on important decisions, refine ideas, and ensure that every aspect of the design aligns perfectly with your brand and objectives. This measured pace often results in a more polished final product and a smoother overall experience for you as the client.
Where are you based?
I’m based in Bristol, UK, and working worldwide.
What website development platforms do you use?
I build most of my websites using WordPress, a powerful and flexible platform for creating dynamic websites which has become incredibly popular. WordPress powers over 43% of all websites on the internet, including the websites of the American White House, NASA and Mercedes-Benz.
WordPress is my preferred platform to start from scratch on, for most projects, due to its flexibility, array of plugins and depth of customisation.
I also work use Elementor and Bricks Builder, as well as Squarespace, Wix all of which are great for certain requirements.
What are your payment terms?
I usually do 50% up front, and the remaining 50% on delivery, which is very common in web design. There’s a fair amount of risk involved in doing a lot of work for someone who could just not pay, hence the 50% upfront payment.
For larger projects I can do 50% upfront, then 25% on design sign-off, and 25% on build. These terms can be discussed and potentially altered. I want to work with people to make great websites that are upfront and straightforward to work with.
Do you offer responsive design?
Absolutely! All websites I design are fully responsive, meaning they adapt seamlessly to different screen sizes and devices. In today’s mobile-first world, it’s crucial that your website looks great and functions perfectly whether it’s viewed on a desktop computer, tablet, or smartphone. This approach ensures an optimal user experience for all your visitors, regardless of how they access your site, which is essential for both user satisfaction and search engine rankings.
What other services do you offer?
Web design involves wearing many hats, which is why I enjoy it so much.
For local clients, I offer a photography and photo-editing service. This is a great way for you to get the right photos for your website, as they’re taken and edited by the person making the site itself. I use a DSLR, multiple lenses and provide lighting. See my services page for more details.
I design professional logos, regularly edit clients’ photos (so they really “pop” on the page), and work with clients to develop a strong brand strategy.
Another vital part of a website is the quality of the writing/sales copy. Though I do not offer a ongoing content creation service, I’m happy to write and advise on the sales copy for the build of a new (or refreshed) website.
What about SEO?
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a fundamental part of my web design process. I build websites with SEO best practices in mind, including optimised site structure, fast loading speeds, and mobile responsiveness. I also implement on-page SEO elements such as meta tags, header structures, and internal linking. While ongoing SEO is a long-term strategy, I ensure your website has a solid foundation to build upon, making it easier for search engines to understand and rank your content.
Can you help with content creation?
Yes, I can assist with content creation as part of the web design process. While you know your business best, I can help refine and optimise your existing content or create new content that aligns with your brand voice and SEO goals. This can include writing compelling copy, sourcing or creating relevant images, and developing a content strategy. My aim is to ensure your website not only looks great but also effectively communicates your message to your target audience.
I do not offer an ongoing social media content service, but I can provide assets to get your started for the launch of your website and beyond.
How do you handle revisions or changes during the design process?
Revisions and changes are a natural part of the design process, and I welcome your feedback throughout the project. I typically include a set number of revision rounds in each project phase, which we’ll agree upon at the start. This ensures we have ample opportunity to refine the design and functionality to meet your vision. I encourage open communication and collaboration, so if you have concerns or ideas at any stage, please share them. My goal is to create a website you’re thrilled with, so I’m always happy to discuss and implement changes that align with your goals and improve the final product.
What is your approach to cyber security?
As aforementioned, I take cyber security very seriously as a breach can drastically affect your brand.
I use a total security suite (regularly rated one of the best in the world) with antivirus, always-on advanced threat prevention and defence, malware shield, vulnerability scanner and firewall. I also use two-factor authentication (2FA) on everything I can, backend security plugins, a premium encrypted password manager, identity passkeys, as well as other tools and methods to avoid backend detection and data breach.
Google and other search engines prioritise websites with robust, up-to-date security. This can positively your ranking/position on Google. Also, having a secure website (HTTPS with SSL certification) is a known ranking factor, contributing to overall site trustworthiness.
My websites, ongoing strategy guidance and maintenance packages all put cyber security at front-and-centre. Even my lower-tiered website package will always have robust security measures in place. The priority here is secure data and brand protection for all my clients.
What happens after the website is launched?
Once your website is launched, our relationship doesn’t end there. I offer post-launch support to ensure everything continues to run smoothly. This includes monitoring for any issues, making minor adjustments as needed, and providing guidance on how to maintain and update your site. I also offer ongoing maintenance packages for clients who prefer professional support in keeping their site secure, up-to-date, and performing optimally. Additionally, I’m always available to discuss future updates or expansions to your site as your business grows and evolves.
How easy is it for me to edit content myself?
I have two answers for this:
If you are somewhat experienced in website editing and tech I would be happy to provide my clients with video instructions on how to change simple elements like images and text, if you do not choose to go for one of my maintenance packages.
If you have very little or no experience in editing websites, it is not a good idea for you to make amendments to a professionally made website. There are so many components and things that can go wrong, which sometimes take a lot of diagnostics to identify and correct.
I have maintenance packages which can include light or frequent amendments and updates. Please contact me for more details.
Do you offer a maintenance service and hosting?
Yes, I do offer maintenance/retainer services to ensure your website is hosted on an ultrafast platform, remains up-to-date, secure, and performing at its best. These services can be tailored to your specific needs, whether that’s regular frontend updates, content management, security monitoring, and/or ongoing optimisation.
Google and other search engines prioritise sites that consistently publish high-quality, relevant content, maintain accurate business information, and implement robust security measures. These factors can positively impact search rankings/your position on Google. Also, having a secure website (HTTPS with SSL certification) is a known ranking factor, contributing to overall site trustworthiness.
I take cyber security very seriously, and you should too, as a cyber security breach can drastically and negatively impact your brand. My maintenance packages all put cyber security at front-and-centre.
Every business has unique requirements when it comes to website maintenance, so I prefer to discuss these details on a personally. If you’re interested in ongoing support for your website, please get in touch, and we can talk about your specific needs.
